Serena Williams Upset at French Open

The French Open is underaway across the Atlantic in Paris, France, and on its third day of competition an absolutely stunning turn of events has occurred. Serena Williams, the 5th ranked player in the world, was just upset in three sets by Virginie Razanno, the 111th ranked player in the world, 6-4, 6-7 (13), 3-6.

This is just about as monumental as it gets. For one, Serena was one of the major favorites to win this tournament and her being out on the third day totally opens up the field, although I do think that Maria Sharapova will eventually win this thing. Secondly, this is the first time ever in Serena's career that she was ousted in the first round of a Grand Slam event.

In some respects, this was a monumental choke and Razanno should be incredibly complimented for her resolve and ability to come back and take the stranglehold of this match, but the story will definitely be centered on Serena's falters. Which while unfair, it might very well be deserved. Serena committed 47 unforced errors according to SBNation, and won only one of her 10 chances for break points during the course of the final two sets.

If this is what the French Open has in store for us on its third day this will be one heck of a tournament.
