UConn to impose sanctions on itself to try and gain entry to NCAA Tournament

In a bold, but hilarious move this afternoon, The University of Connecticut has decided according to the Associated Press to impose sanctions and penalties on itself for the 2013 season.

The university is looking to regain entry into the NCAA Tournament next season after it was told it was going to be denied access to the tournament due to years spent with academics that were embarrassingly low and below the standard of the university.

According to the AP, UConn will attempt to garner a waiver from the NCAA to allow them to play in the tournament and if they do so, they have proposed the idea of cutting games from the schedule, forfeiting their incoming revenue that is awarded to the Big East Conference for its participation in the conference's season-ending tournament in 2013, going from 27 to 23 games in the 2012-13 season, as well as not letting head coach Jim Calhoun meet off-campus with recruits during the contact period.

Frankly, in the words of Yahoo! Sports' Pat Forde, this is rich.

UConn can't possibly look good by doing this, right?

This attempt of trying to skid away from violations by imposing sanctions on themselves is hilariously ignorant and childish. While usually this move does bring the hammer down less, the NCAA shouldn't let this occur. Because if it is about academics in this situation, then merely cutting games, not letting Calhoun meet off-campus with prospective recruits, or not accepting revenue is most certainly not enough.

It should instead look at the academics and if it's changed and gotten better, then perhaps the case should be reviewed if there is significant improvement. Until then personally, Connecticut shouldn't be allowed entry into the tournament just because it's trying to find loopholes and approach this like they actually care about academics in this situation.

But stranger things have happened with the inconsistent NCAA. So only time will tell.
