VIDEO: Shin-Soo Choo Hits a Double, Announcer Implies Sushi is a Performance-Enhancer

(Credit: SportsGrid)
Last night, Shin-Soo Choo of the Cleveland Indians hit a ball that would bounce off of the center field wall, allowing for Choo to run into second base with a standup double. The double was Choo's 31st of the season. Normally, hitting your 31st double of the season would not be worth noting unless you were breaking a record, reaching some sort of rounded-number that is disguised as an achievement, or if something absurd happened right after it. In this case, it is the latter. Indians commentator Rick Manning of SportsTime Ohio (STO) took the time after this double to make a really, really incredulous comment. Let's go to the videotape, Warner Wolf-style.

So let's think about this for a second here. Not only were Manning's comments borderline racist, they were also completely off base. Am I supposed to believe that sushi is some sort of performance-enhancer? Sure, it is very healthy and extremely tasty; but it is the farthest thing away from a juicer. It isn't even that fattening, so to imply that you would need to eat more of it before the start of the game so that you can hit home runs is one of the most unintelligent things I have ever heard.

Kudos to you, Rick Manning. You not only managed to ring out a near-racist comment, but you also sounded foolish as well. A rare combination.

  1. To be fair, they went on to mention that the team went out for sushi before the game. Not sure if it was a cover-up, but if it's true, then it's just a bad case of foot-in-mouth.
