A rumor floating around the National Football League may be one that Falcons fans want to turn their eyes away from.
As if it hadn't been bad enough to get utterly embarrassed in their Wild Card Playoff Game last Sunday afternoon against the New York Giants 24-2, their top cornerback may have spent his final game as an Atlanta Falcon on the bench. Dan Parr of Pro Football Weekly is reporting that the Falcons do not expect Brent Grimes to be back next season as a member of the team.
Parr suggests that the Falcons will spend their money elsewhere this season to keep other members of their core in tact and that Grimes may not fit within their finances, despite being their best cornerback on their team and arguably one of the best all season (3rd amongst all cornerbacks in completion percentage against, and 10th in passer rating against). Parr also cites that the Falcons believe that Dominique Franks and Chris Owens played impressively enough to believe that they will get better as their careers progressed.
While this is true, losing a top flight cornerback like Grimes may be a big blow to their already questionable secondary. Especially if he goes to teams that need cornerbacks in their own conference (Dallas, Green Bay, Detroit, Chicago, San Francisco, etc.) or even their own division (Tampa Bay comes to mind).
That contract to "The Human Torpedo" Dunta Robinson sure doesn't look great right now in hindsight.
