New York Rangers head coach John Tortorella has made a habit as of late, or, for most of his career rather, of not being so polite to the media at press conferences following games in which his team has lost. That trend continued last night after the Rangers fell to the New Jersey Devils in Game 2 of the Eastern Conference Finals. Let's just say that post-press conference reaction from the media was about as kind as Torts was to his peers. Before we delve into that, let's go to the video tape.
Now following this horrendous showing, just about every hockey writer that I follow on Twitter, or most sports pundits that had knowledge of the game went in on Tortorella and didn't hold back very much. Adrian Dater of Sports Illustrated and the Denver Post wrote this scathing blog post on Tortorella, in which he prefaced on Twitter as "dropping the gloves" on the Rangers head coach.
And frankly, I can't disagree with anything he or anybody else said.
Tortorella has to grow up and treat the media members with respect. It's understandable to be a little shook following a loss (in which, quite frankly, his team was outplayed from pillar to post and from the opening bell to the closing bell) but if you do not want to give any answers and "keep it in the room" then don't go up to the podium for the press conference. Don't waste these reporters' times when they are trying to do their jobs, and show some respect for crying out loud. This cute little act that Torts has needs to stop. Everyone always says, "oh that's just Torts being Torts," but his actions last night were classless, rude, and downright stupid.
