2012 NHL Free Agencypalooza


Welcome to the first annual NHL Free Agentpalooza. Here in this post you will find all free agent musings, rumors, and signings that occur during this NBA offseason. These will be posted in realtime, so I will try to update this as much as I can. Free Agency is just under 12 hours from beginning and there are already some rumors going around the league.


7/1:
  • Shane Doan, formerly of the Phoenix Coyotes, doesn't sound too happy with the situation in Phoenix. According to Chris Kuc of the Chicago Tribune, Doan said, ""If the situation in Phoenix was any different then I wouldn’t be coming up on July 1st."" Jonathan Toews of the Chicago Blackhawks recently talked to Shane Doan during the NHLPA meetings in The Windy City, and said he'd love to have him aboard on the Blackhawks.
  • Josh Yohe of the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review tweeted that he expects the Pittsburgh Penguins to offer coveted free agent forward Zach Parise a 10-year contract worth $75-80 million. Parise's most notable rumored suitors also include the Minnesota Wild, Detroit Red Wings, and New Jersey Devils. 
  • The Philadelphia Flyers are reportedly in talks with the Columbus Blue Jackets for a trade for forward Rick Nash, who has been the subject of many trade rumors this past season and this offseason. Tim Panaccio of CSN Philadelphia tweeted that the talks are serious. 
  • The Edmonton Oilers signed prized free agent Justin Schultz, a defenseman from The University of Wisconsin, to a  Schultz was once drafted by the Anaheim Ducks, but a contract could not worked out. The former Badger played incredibly well in the WCHA, as he is the two-time reigning Defensive Player of the Year of the conference , and two time member of the All-WCHA First Team.
  • Zach Parise is officially hitting the open market in roughly forty minutes. Bob McKenzie of TSN had the scoop.
  • Ryan Suter is not expected to sign today, according to a report.
  • Jonas Gustavsson is going to be an unrestricted free agent at 12pm, tweets Pierre LeBrun. Ray Whitney will also be a free agent according to Darren Dreger, and LeBrun also tweeted that Matt Carle will be going to free agency as well. 
  • Jordan Staal, following his trade to the Carolina Hurricanes last week, has signed a long-term extension according to Hurricanes GM Jim Rutherford. 10 years, $60M tweets Bob McKenzie. 
  • Ryan Smyth will be returning to the Edmonton Oilers. The terms are $4.5M over 2 years, tweets Darren Dreger of TSN.
  • The Florida Panthers and Scott Clemmenson agreed to terms on a contract according to Brad May. The terms of the deal are for 2 years in the $1.2M range.
  • Martin Brodeur is heading to the market, tweets Pierre LeBrun. Adding onto that, TSN says that the Chicago Blackhawks are interested in the veteran goaltender. 
  • The Minnesota Wild have sent offers to Zach Parise and Ryan Suter, their Twitter confirmed
  • Jonas Gustavsson has found a suitor. The Detroit Red Wings have signed him for a $3M contract for 2 years, per Brad May.
  • The Philadelphia Flyers have also sent offers to Zach Parise and Ryan Suter, tweets Pierre LeBrun. LeBrun also added that Sidney Crosby reached out to Parise as a part of the pitch for the Pittsburgh Penguins.
  • The Ottawa Senators signed Mike Lundin to a 1-year, $1.15M contract, tweets Bob McKenzie of TSN. He adds on that the New York Rangers re-signed Stu Bickel.
  • David Moss and the Phoenix Coyotes agreed to a 2-year contract, with a cap hit TBA, tweets Bob McKenzie of TSN.
  • Yann Dannis signed a 2-way contract with the Edmonton Oilers, tweets Renaud P. Lavoie of RDS. The terms were 1-year and 775,000 dollars for the NHL, and 300,000 for the LAH.
  • According to Darren Dreger, John Mitchell signed a 2-year contract worth $1.1M annually. 
  • Pierre LeBrun tweeted that the Chicago Blackhawks have interest in Martin Brodeur, and have reached out to him. Jesse Rogers of ESPNChicago.com later added that the interest is mutual.
  • Aaron Ward of TSN tweets that Ray Whitney has agreed to terms with the Dallas Stars on a 2-year, $9M contract. 
  • Adam Burish and the San Jose Sharks have agreed to a 4-year contract worth $1.8M annually according to Gord Miller of TSN.
  • Zenon Konopka and the Minnesota Wild have agreed to a 2-year contract worth $925K annually according to Michael Russo of the Minneapolis Star Tribune
  • Matt Carkner agreed to terms on a 3-year, $4.5 million contract with the New York Islanders according to Arthur Staple of Newsday. The Islanders also signed Brad Boyes
  • Big news. Ryan Suter may have found his suitor. Nick Kypreos of Sportsnet just tweeted that he "may" have found his destination and has picked the Detroit Red Wings. Once it's confirmed, more info will be given. Update: Nick Kypreos has just added that he's looking for confirmation but a decision is imminent. Update (2): Nick Cotsonika of Yahoo! Sports just tweeted this, so, stay tuned. 
  • Rob Rossi of the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review tweeted that the New York Rangers have signed Aaron Asham. Terms are 2-years at $2M.
  • The Florida Panthers Twitter account confirmed that the Panthers signed defenseman Filip Kubla to a two-year contract.
  • Dustin Penner is returning to the Stanley Cup Champion Los Angeles Kings on a 1-year contract for just above $3M, per Pierre LeBrun.
  • Brendan Prust is going to the Montreal Canadiens according to Renaud P. Lavoie of RDS and Pierre LeBrun of ESPN/TSN. The terms are $8M for 4 years
  • The Chicago Blackhawks signed defenseman Sheldon Brookbank, per Jesse Rogers of ESPNChicago.com
  • Former New Jersey Devil Alexei Ponikarovsky is headed to the Winnipeg Jets on a one-year deal, per Bob McKenzie.
  • Former New York Islander P.A. Parenteau is going to the Colorado Avalanche on a 4-year, $16M deal, per Bob McKenzie.
  • UPDATE: Ryan Suter has not picked a team yet, says his agent, per Pierre LeBrun
  • The Tampa Bay Lightning and Sammy Salo have agreed to terms on a two year deal worth $3.75M per year, tweets Gord Miller of TSN.
  • Ryan Suter and Zach Parise will not make their decisions tonight.
  • Sheldon Souray and the Anaheim Ducks have agreed upon a three year, $11 millon contract, per Eric Stephens of the Orange County Register
  • James Garrison will be a Vancouver Canuck, as he has come to terms on a 6 year deal with a $4.6M AAV.
7/2:
  • The New Jersey Devils avoided a scare and re-signed Martin Brodeur to a 2-year, $9M contract according to Renaud P. Lavoie of RDS. They also re-signed Johan Hedberg to a 2-year deal too according to CBS.
  • Alexander Radulov is headed to the KHL for a four-year deal. His destination is CSKA Moscow
  • The St. Louis Blues signed defenseman Jeff Woywitka to a one year, 2-way contract, their Twitter announced
  • Per Darren Dreger, the Calgary Flames and Jiri Hudler agreed to a 4 year, $16 million contract. 
  • The Montreal Canadiens signed goalie Carey Price to a 6-year deal, according to John Lu of TSN
  • Mike Heika of the Dallas Morning News reported that the Dallas Stars traded Steve Ott and Adam Pardy to the Buffalo Sabres for Derek Roy
  • Olli Jokinen agreed to a 2 year, $9M deal with the Winnipeg Jets, according to Darren Dreger.
  • Both Zach Parise and Ryan Suter did not make decisions on their destinations. 
7/3:
  • Erik Johnson agreed to a 4 year, $15 million deal with the Colorado Avalanche, per EJ Hradek of NHL.com.
  • Bryce Salvador re-signed with the New Jersey Devils for $9.5M for 3 years, per Darren Dreger.
  • Jaromir Jagr and the Dallas Stars have agreed to a 1-year, $4.5 million deal, per Pierre LeBrun.
  • Taylor Pyatt has agreed to come to the New York Rangers on a 2 year deal, per Darren Dreger.
  • The Detroit Free Press reports that the Detroit Red Wings' initial offer to free agent Ryan Suter  was a 13-year, $80M deal and now it is up to $90M. The DFP is also reporting that if they cannot land Zach Parise, they will aggressively pursue Shane Doan.
