Four months ago, Melky Cabrera won the 2012 All-Star Game MVP award. About a month later, Melky was suspended for 50 games for testing positive for testosterone. Now, as the 2013 MLB season looms, Melky has found a new home.
Cabrera and the Toronto Blue Jays agreed to a two-year deal, according to an ESPN Deportes report. The team has not yet confirmed the news, but all indications are that the club and Cabrera have agreed to terms on this deal, which is worth $16 million over the two years.
Cabrera, 28, has history within the American League as well as the East Division. He spent the first nine years of his career within the New York Yankees organization, and the first five seasons of his career as a Yankee. As a Yankee, Cabrera hit .269 over five seasons with 36 HR and 228 RBI. His career, of course, was on the upswing after being dealt from Atlanta to Kansas City, and he then found success that of course now looks tainted.
Melky brings some ammunition to a Toronto lineup that is suddenly filling up quite nicely. The Blue Jays themselves look like they might be ready to step up to the mainstays of the division, at least from the hitting perspective.
